Exemption request procedure
When to apply for an exemption?
The request for an exemption can be made at the earliest six months before your vehicle is no longer allowed to enter the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Check our "Calendar" to find out your vehicle's due date.
Required documents?
- For vehicles registered in Belgium, you need your identity card and the vehicle registration certificate to apply for an exemption.
- For foreign-registered vehicles, you must first register your vehicle, before applying for an exemption. You will need the vehicle registration certificate.
Processing the request
Once submitted, the exemption application is processed within 69 days of receipt
If your exemption request is accepted, you will receive confirmation:
- by post if you live in Belgium
- by email if you live abroad
Please note: if you have not yet received confirmation of your exemption, you may be fined if your vehicle travels inside the LEZ without meeting the access criteria.
No answer after 69 days? The request is considered refused and your vehicle cannot be driven in the LEZ.
How long is the exemption valid
Use our simulator to find out the validity date of your exemption.
Is your exemption about to expire? Renewal applications must be submitted at least three months before the expiry of the exemption. Please note: No expiry reminders will be sent.
Fleets of more than 20 vehicles?
Companies with more than 20 vehicles can apply for a "mass" exemption by contacting Brussels Taxation.
What you need to know
- The vehicle's Euro standard determines whether it qualifies for an exemption. Retrofitting a particulate filter does not change the Euro standard, and therefore does not entitle the vehicle to an exemption for the LEZ.
- No modification to your vehicle's engine can change its Euro standard.
- There are no exemptions for vehicles used for business purposes (with the exception of those listed above).
