When was the LEZ introduced?
The LEZ is officially established since 01/01/2018. The LEZ applies every day of the week, 24/7.
A transition period - during which only warnings were sent - took place to allow residents and visitors/commuters to adapt to the new system.
In 2018, the transition period lasted 9 months. It is since October 1st, 2018 that the non-respect of the access criteria results in a fine (see enforcement).
Only the oldest diesel vehicles are affected in 2018 (see table): the access criteria will change over time so gradually more vehicles will be affected by the LEZ.
The transition period for the years 2019 and 2020 will last 3 months. These transition periods will only apply to the vehicles affected by the new criteria. In 2019, the newly prohibited vehicles will not be fined before April 1st.
